Alfonso “Fonnie” Hayman, a beloved son, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, nephew, cousin, colleague, and friend, passed away on May 24, 2025. He was born to the late Clarence and Edith Hayman on November 2, 1948, in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Alfonso was educated in the Philadelphia school system, and despite the challenges of segregation, he lived a full life defined by strength, service, humility, and a deep, unwavering love for his family. A proud veteran of the United States Army, Alfonso served his country with honor as an 82nd Airborne and was later honorably discharged. His discipline and determination carried over to a notable career as a professional boxer, where he earned widespread respect. During his career, he was a Welterweight Champion of North America, receiving numerous awards for his accomplishments. In 2017, he was inducted into the Pennsylvania Boxing Hall of Fame in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport. Alfonso was also a proud and long-time “A Member” of Lincoln Post 89. A man of many talents, he had a creative spirit along with his gifted pair of hands. He found joy in music, photography, and taking things apart—then “trying” to put them back together. His playful curiosity and passion for learning brought light to those around him. Alfonso was preceded in death by his wife, Maria Hayman; his parents, Clarence and Edith Hayman; his sons, Jamal Hayman and Michael (Mike) Mungin; his brothers, Clarence Hayman and Nelson Hayman; and his nephew, Clarence Hayman, Jr. Alfonso, “Fonnie,” as he was affectionately known, deeply loved and adored his family. He is survived by his son, Lamont Hayman; his two cherished grandchildren, Qadirah Hellams and Jamal Hellams; his sister, Maxine Hayman; and his dear last living aunt, Laura Hayman-Thomas (Aunt Abbie). He also leaves behind three nephews: Nephews: Felton, aka Butter Felton (Kimberly Hayman); Hakim, and Edres; Nieces: Marcia, Melissa, Kim, Annette, Yamina, Adar, Lynn, Tracy, Cathy, Michelle, and Keisha, a special friend Andrea, a special cousin, Carlos Stokes, –along with a host great and great-great nieces and nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends. “Fonnie” you will be deeply missed and forever remembered. ===============================================
“For My Brother, My Heart” By Your Sister Maxine For seventy-five sweet, fleeting years, You stood beside me through laughter and tears. A brother, a friend, so faithful, so true— The world felt gentler just walking with you. You guarded my heart, my stories, my days, With quiet strength in your steadfast ways. From scraped knees to dreams, both broken and bright, Fonnie, you (Squeaky and Nelson) were my shelter, my compass, my light. We danced through time with steps all our own, In a rhythm of memories only we’ve known. The jokes, the quarrels, the silent grace— No one else could ever take your place. You soared through storms, both tender and tough, In uniform proud, your spirit so tough. But more than the titles and honors you bore, Was the love you gave—and gave even more. Now Heaven holds you but still, I remain, With your voice in my soul like a soft refrain. And though I must walk the rest of the way, I'll carry your laughter every day. So, rest now, dear brother, your journey is done— But know that your sister still calls you her “sun.” Forever in heartbeats, in whispers, in song— The bond we have lives forever strong. Love you Brother, Maxine
=“Dear Pop-Pop” By Your Grandchildren, Qadirah and Jamal Even though you are no longer here, Grandpop, your love and wisdom will forever guide us. Thank you for always being there— for your hugs, your stories, and your quiet strength. We will always remember you, because there will never be another who could take your place in our hearts or match the love you gave so freely. You will be truly missed. Forever in our hearts. Forever our Pop-Pop. With all our love, Qadirah and Jamal
“DAD” By Your Son, Lamont I love you. I’m proud of you. I’m proud to be your son. And I love you—for loving me through: the difficult parts, the good parts, and everything in between. I am going to miss you dearly. Rest easy, Dad. Love Lamont
