Derrick Starks was born September 23, 1956 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania to Maggie Starks and Calvin Jones. He was preceded in death by his brother Lawerence (Larr) Starks, his mother Maggie B. Finch, and his stepfather Charles E. Finch.
Derrick was the youngest of six children. Although he was tall in stature, he liked being called "little brother". He was educated in the Philadelphia Public School system. During his youth he was very energetic and loved to play his bongos. When he reached naturity he joined the Nation of Islam.
He studied the Noble Qur'an and adopted the Muslim beliefs. He accepted the name Shah-uDeen Muhammad. Shau-uDeen believed that even he was incarcerated he was not in bondage. He was steadfast to his faith and continued to have hope.taught his male family members and theBrothers at Graterford Prison to respect and love themselves and others. He was appointed a brother Student Minister.
