Gary E. Holmes was born on May 8, 1949, in Philadelphia, PA, and transitioned peacefully on Sunday, June 1, 2025.
Gary was born and raised in South Philadelphia and was the eldest child of the late Eddie and Essie Holmes. He was educated in the Philadelphia School System and graduated from South Philadelphia High School. During his high school years, Gary ran track and played softball—two sports he truly enjoyed. He went on to earn an associate degree from Wilberforce University in Ohio.
Blessed with charisma, wisdom, and a natural gift for connecting with people, Gary built a long and respected career as a car salesman. For 34 years, he worked at Pacifico Ford, where he was known affectionately as “Doc.” His clients trusted him, his colleagues admired him, and his work ethic was unmatched.
Gary was known for his signature style—always dressed sharply in tailored suits and his iconic Kangol hats. But beyond his appearance, he was known as a “quiet storm”—he didn’t have to say much to get his point across. His presence alone spoke volumes. He had a calm strength that left a lasting impression on everyone around him.
After retiring, Gary embraced life even more fully. He loved traveling with his devoted partner, Rita, sharing meaningful experiences and laughter along the way. He also treasured the “special” time he spent with his son, Gary Williams—whether talking about boxing matches, sharing laughs over old stories, or simply enjoying dinner together at Miller’s Ale House. Those cherished moments now allow his memory to live on in the heart of his son and those who loved him most.
Gary had a deep love for oldies music and never missed an opportunity to “Bop.” Music moved him, and his joy was infectious. He lived with grace, rhythm, and soul. A passionate sports fan, Gary was a devoted follower of the Philadelphia Eagles and an avid boxing enthusiast. Whether cheering on his team or watching a big fight, he brought the same enthusiasm and sharp insight that he did to everything he loved.
Gary is preceded in death by his parents, Eddie and Essie Holmes.
He leaves to cherish his memory: his loving partner, Rita; his son, Gary Williams; daughter-in-law, Nakia Williams; sister, Linda Powell (John); niece, Kesha Carter-Baker (husband: Lamont; children: Lyndon and Morgan); beloved grandchildren: Jasmine, Gary Jr., and Imani Williams; and great-granddaughter, AmyahWilliams. He is also remembered fondly by extended family, friends, and all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
Gary E Holmes will be deeply missed but never forgotten—remembered for his strength, his style, his soul, and above all, his love.
