Maitland McLeod

Maitland Ann Floyd McLeod(Mae) , the youngest daughter of 14 children, was born September 28, 1932 in Lumberton, NC to the late Casewell Barney and Flossie Ann (nee Gavin) Floyd. On February 17, 2022, Mae died peacefully surrounded by those who loved her. She was 89. Mae was educated in the Robeson County public school system until the family migrated to Philadelphia. she completed her final year of education in the Philadelphia School District. Mae gave her life to Christ at an early young age by joining the Pentecostal United Holy Church in Lumberton. In Philadelphia, she was a member of the following Pentecostal Assembly of Jesus Only, St. James Missionary Baptist Church, and lastly since 1986 Gospel Temple Baptist Church .under the leadership of Rev. Dr. Daniel T. Black. She was a member of the Nurse's Unit for many years. Mae married the late Robert McLeod, Sr. in 1950. She raised five children in her South Philadelphia home of more than forty years. Her love for them shone through as she gave them her best. She kept an immaculate home, worked tirelessly and sacrificed often to ensure her children had all they needed to lead their happiest lives. Mae wasa sharp dresser too, always wearing the finest walking suits, dresses, donning the latest hair styles, and flawless makeup, She instilled those qualities in her children as well, saying, "We may be rich, but we can live in a nicely kept home & dress like we have a million dollars." Her kids would be proud to invite friends over to share a meal and the warm, familial vibes Mae provided. Throughout her life, Mae held roles as a housekeeper and caretaker. She also worked at Frankford Arsenal for a time. While she cared for her ailing mother, she obtained a job at Hahnemann Hospital as an operating room technician. She served in this capacity for 28 years. Post retirement, Mae did as she pleased. She traveled, entertained, gardened, renovated her home and cared for loved ones. She loved people and selflessly went out of her way to care for them. It wasn't uncommon for her to share her meals with neighbors or to show up to a family holiday function with friends who otherwise had no plans. Mae is survived by her children Robert "Buddy" McLeod, Jr, Roger McLeod (Theresa), Flossie "Mcfee" Perry, Ernest "Cooter" Floyd and her adoptive son, keith JONES (Shadonna). Her youngest son, Roderick McLeod Preceded her in death. Mae is also survived by her sister Juanita Floyd Lee (George), her two brothers, Larry and Billie Ray FLoyd; her grandchildren, Terrance "Sparky" Hamilton, Damon Moore (Keziah), Yanina "Kiki" Miller, LaToya "Gina" Floyd, Wylonna "Lona" Perry, Malik McDowell, Nicole McLeod, Dawoyne Winn, Roderick McCladdie McLeod, Angelean "Angel" Floyd, Courtney Smith Ashleigh), Damien Brown, Gregory Johnson and Timothy Pierce; twelve great grandchildren, a host of nieces & nephews and several friends that were near and dear to her heart.
